More About The Movie

Set in Tumbbad in the 1920s, the story revolves around the three generations of families facing the consequences. When they build a temple for the firstborn of a goddess named Hastar–he who must not worship. Hastar is a terrible entity who can curse a person yet also can grant gold coins. And the story emphasized human nature and the never-ending greed.

The myth of Hastar is, when the Goddess of Prosperity created the world, she gave birth to Hastar, followed by 16 Crore Gods and Goddesses. Hastar was her firstborn and was her favourite child, but Hastar was very greedy when the Goddess of Prosperity offered Hastar the ownership of all the gold in the universe or all the food. He took the gold and tried to take over the food in his greed, fighting with his brothers and sisters.

The 16 crore gods and goddesses overpowered Hastar, and when they tried to kill him, the Goddess of Prosperity intervened and begged for his life. The 16 crore gods and goddesses accepted her request on one condition: Hastar will never be mentioned in the Puranas, nor should he ever be worshipped.

Goddess of prosperity, a symbol of wealth and food, had given birth to around 160 Crore children. When she created the universe, her closest child was first born Hatsar, hungry for gold and food. He managed to acquire gold from his mother but was attacked by others when he tried to gain food and was saved by his mother.

He was forgiven on the condition that he won’t ever be worshipped like others and forgotten in history.

Earlier in the Story

In 1918 Vinayak’s mother served Sarkar sexual favours at his Wada for gold coin while at home she has two sons Vinayak and Sadashiv, and taking care of a demon Sarkar’s great grandmother. The latter knows about hidden treasures in Wada.

After Sarkar passes away, Vinayak’s mother decides to leave the village with him and Sadashiv, but Vinayak is hungry for the hidden treasure. And wants to know from the Demon Sadashiv passes away due to an accident, and both leave the village with Vinayak promising his mother never to return Tumbbad.

Fourteen years later, a grown-up Vinayak is in debt and returns to Tumbbad to find the treasure. He sees the Demon is still alive, and a tree has come upon her body. She tells him about the hidden treasure which leads in the womb of the goddess where Hastar sleeps.

The Demon tells Vinayak that he will have to give her salvation after leading the path and warns him to curse him like her if he touches the treasure. For years Vinayak starts taking gold from Wada, and at a certain age, he is not that fit and active and begins to train his son Pandurang for the same.

Later in the Story

In 1947, Vinayak took Pandurang to the mansion to train him for the same purpose and remain told not to bring the dough doll down. But he secretly brings a dough doll, and Hastar unexpectedly attacks. They barely manage to escape, and Vinayak scolds his son for nearly getting them touch.

Pandurang suggests stealing Hastar’s loincloth, and they make dozens of dough dolls to distract Hastar. However, the two become trapped inside the womb when separate Hastar appears for each of those dolls.

With no hope of escaping, Vinayak ties the dolls to his body to act as bait. Once the coast is clear, Pandurang climbs back to the surface to see his father mutated into a monster outside the well.

Vinayak presents him with the stolen loincloth that he stole from Hastar, but Pandurang refuses to take it. Sobbing at seeing what his father turned into, Pandurang reluctantly sets Vinayak on fire and leaves.

The shooting of this film was completed in 6 years. The monsoon scenes of this film were shot in 4 monsoon seasons in real. The film received the Film-fare Award for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Sound Design
